Refugee issues might seem distant to Taiwanese people, just something that happens on a screen in a faraway land. Although the Taiwanese government hasn’t passed any refugee law that would enable a refugee screening or protection mechanism, it doesn’t mean that we don’t have any asylum seekers landing and living with us. De facto refugees from Hong Kong, Tibet, and Ukraine are among us. Some of them are offering support to their countrymen and healing their emotional trauma. Some are actively spreading awareness of the difficulties and stories of their hometown.
We can't stop natural or man-made disasters, but we still can provide a welcoming refuge by being more understanding of their situation and being their champion. So they can rebuild their lives before settling in or returning to a permanent home, wherever it might be. We cordially invite you to join our virtual refugee homeland display and explore the stories of these groups.
